Broadcast television
An operator headend has one job above all others: it must not stop. Everything about how the system is specified — redundancy, thermal margin, the choice of transmission standard — follows from that, and the equipment list is secondary to it.
The chain below is the same whether the network serves one district or a region. What changes with scale is the number of carriers, the degree of redundancy, and whether the headend is one rack or several.

Design
What decides the design
Four things that change the specification more than the equipment list does.
- Transmission standard DVB-C, DVB-T and ATSC are common; the choice is usually set by the receivers already in subscribers' homes, not by the headend.
- Redundancy For commercial service, plan for a spare modulator and a spare encoder on the critical paths. Units swap in without a reconfiguration.
- Scrambling and access control Conditional access is normally specified alongside the headend. Tell us the CAS so we can confirm the multiplexer configuration.
- Monitoring Every unit reports over the network. Decide the monitoring point before installation — retrofitting it means another visit.
